Description

An intensivist (critical care specialist) is another name for a physician with special training who takes care of intensive care patients. Many physicians work in specialized areas like a cardiologist for heart disease or a nephrologist for kidney disease. Taking care of very sick patients in the intensive care has become a special area too. Some physicians now train to become intensivists. Other physicians add this to their specialty. Critical care is the treatment of people who are seriously ill. In the hospital, this care typically takes place in the intensive care unit (ICU) or in specialized units, for people who have had heart attacks or major surgery. When you or someone you love is admitted for critical care, it can seem very different and much scarier than a typical hospital stay.
